Janet Lyon Spiers

Janet Lyon Spiers was born 3 January 1828 in Klimarnock, Scotland, eldest daughter of John and Janet Thompson Lyon. She was married to George Spiers at the age of 19, in 1856. They left Scotland, when they reached New York, Janet insisted on remaining in New York instead of starting out to cross the plains with the handcart company, in four days after landing she gave birth to a son. They stayed in New York four years then crossed the plains, arriving in Salt Lake City 30 August 1860. They made their home in the 11th Ward for one year, moving to Tooele in 1861. They brought a weaving loom, they wove cloth for men's clothes, women and children's dresses. They continued weaving until the Provo Woolen Mills started up. Later in life Mr. Spiers went into the mercantile business in 1877. Janet was chosen Ist Councilor to Janet DeLaMare, Relief Society President. She served here 14 years. On release of Janet DeLaMare 15 April 1891, Janet Spiers was chosen and unanimously sustained President, with Mary Ann Atkin, 1st Councilor, and May Lindberg, 2nd Councilor. She was released as President 26 February 1897. She died at the age 91 years and 10 months.
