James Fife was a wheel wright by trade, when he lived in Scotland. He and his wife embraced the gospel while living there. They with their seven children left Leith, Edinburg, Scotland and emigrated to Nauvoo in 1842. They lived here for one year, from there they moved to Macedonia, Iowa, in 1843. He was living there when the Prophet was killed. They were driven from their home by an armed mob of 250 men. They bought their cattle and moved to Council Bluffs in 1849. They started for Utah in 1850 with four head of cattle and a covered wagon. There were lots of buffalo and Indians while crossing the plains. James Fife owned a piece of ground where the Sears Roebuck store was on the comer of 3' South and Main Street in Salt Lake City. He sold this plot of ground for an overcoat. He left his wife Margaret Mathieson and married Charlotte Brown Floyd. He was sealed to her in Oct. 1856. They moved to southern Utah where they had children. His first wife and children lived in Providence, Cache, Utah. One of the older boys in the family, William Fife, cared for his mother and family that was left.
